Leo Thomas Schmitt

LEO THOMAS TOMSCHMITT age 80 of Portage passed away Thursday January 1 2009 at Millers Merry Manor Nursing Home. He was born in Castleton North Dakota on July 25 1928. Mr. Schmitt retired from U.S. Steel American Bridge as a time keeper in July of 1985 and then retired from the Portage Sanitation and Sewer Dept. in 2000. He was an avid soccer coach and referee and absolutely loved the Blue Devils of Duke. Leo was a member of the Real Life Community Church in Portage. He was a veteran of the Korean War and was extremely proud of his military service. Leo loved God and he loved his country. Leo was preceded in death by his parents two brothers and five sisters. He is survived by two sisters: Judy Schmitt of Valparaiso and Joanne (Mickey) Fenlon of New Jersey. He is also loved and survived by his four children: Shirley Schmitt of Texas Sandie Schmitt of Portage Tom Schmitt of La Porte and Rich Schmitt of Portage five grandchildren: William (Leah) Prohaska of Minessotta Michelle (Bill) Schroeder of Texas Paul Schmitt of Portage Rich Schmitt of Portage and Tommy Schmitt of Virginia six great-grandchildren and by his life companion Sharon Schmitt of Portage. Leo will be sorely missed by so many he loved and brought a smile and/or laugh to. Friends may call at Pruzin Brothers Funeral Service 2700 Willowcreek Rd. Portage on Sunday from 2-8 P.M. Funeral Services will be held Monday January 5 2009 at 1:00 P.M. from Pruzin Brothers Chapel with Pastor Bob Burton officiating. At rest Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the VNA Hospice Center or to the Parkinsons Foundation.
