Joel E. Matthews, age 77, of DeMotte, IN, passed away on Wednesday, February 3, 2021.

Joel is survived by his wife of 47 years, Gayle Matthews; children: Tira Allison, Holly (Robert) Becker and Lori (Nicholas) Scheeringa; grandchildren: Nicole, David, Parker, Ava, Nicholas and Zoey; great-grandchildren: Aurora and Brinley; brothers: Ken, George and Doug; sisters: Mary, Karen and Debbie.

Joel was preceded in death by his parents: Albert Matthews and Ellen Hargis; children: Nicole Lynn Matthews; brothers: Albert “Junior’ Matthews and Paul Matthews; and sister, Linda Wolfe.

Joel retired from Ford Motor Company Assembly Plant after 42 years of service. He served as a Union Officer for UAW. Joel was a member of Our Lady of Consolation Church in Crown Point. He enjoyed spending time with his grandkids and singing Elvis songs on the deck in the summer.

Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, May 1, 2021 at Geisen Funeral, Cremation & Reception Centre, 606 E. 113th Ave., Crown Point, IN 46307 from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM.

Memorial Services will be at 12:00 PM on Saturday, May 1, 2021 at Our Lady of Consolation, 8303 Taft St., Merrillville, IN 46410. Inurnment to follow at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens in Schererville, IN.

So sad to see you go so early Joel. I will always have fond memories of you and your laugh and smile. It was always a great time being with you and the family. I have so many memories from my childhood; I think I spent more time at Aunt Gayle & Uncle Joe’s than I did my own home. When we kids were too loud and rowdy he would yell with a smirk on his face we’d run to the bedroom and giggle. His bark was worse than his bite. His laughter filled a room you couldn’t help but laugh with him. Prayers of peace and comfort to Gayle, Tira, Holly, Lori and their families as they continue on life’s journey without him. Rest In Peace Uncle Joe you will be missed by all who knew and loved you.

I want to wish you the sincerest condolences from the Trzupek family. We are all shocked and heart broken over the passing of Joel. He was truly a great man that loved his family and did whatever was needed to give his family the best. I know you are celebrating his life so the one story I would like to share is whenever he would leave a note for his girls. He would always spell it grills and I know Holly always laughed about it. I’m positive he knew how to spell girls, but he knew that would make them laugh and that was all that mattered to him. Will miss Joe he was a good friend.

I know HIS family is going to experience how terrible the loss is when there is a get-together. He had an "amazing" sense of humor, I had some great times with him & Gayle, we laughed many hours away. He had a soft heart. He always had a smile. He was just a great guy. I pray for strength, comfort and peace for each one who grieves his absence.
