Joan Louise Klein (nee Childress), age 65, of Dyer, IN, passed away on Friday, August 18, 2023.

Joan is survived by her high school sweetheart and husband of 45 years, Mathew Klein; their 3 loving children: Chandra (David) Pallikan, Scott (Christina Norton) Klein, Michael Jerome Klein; and granddaughter, Kristen “Sweet Pea” Pallikan. She is also survived by her 3 brothers: Steve (Alex Marin) Childress, Alan (Sherry) Childress, Michael (Margaret Ptacek) Childress; sister, Lynn Childress; her lifelong friend and “sister”, Mary Kay Collins; and her many nieces, nephews and good friends.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents: Roger and Norma Childress.

Joan was a longtime and faithful member of Zion United Church of Christ in Dyer, IN. She was a graduate of Crown Point High School, Class of 1976 and went on to earn her nursing degree from I.U.N.
Joan was a RN for over 35 years, 20 of which she lovingly cared for and companioned patients on their final journey in hospice care, many at William J. Riley Hospice Center in Munster. Joan loved camping at Indian Lakes in Wolcottville, IN, baking and spending time with her granddaughter, Kristen, and many other special friends. She will be greatly missed by those who knew her.

Friends may visit with the family on Thursday, August 24, 2023, at Geisen Funeral, Cremation & Reception Centre, 606 E. 113th Ave., Crown Point, IN 46307 from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A Celebration of Joan’s life will begin at 7:00 PM with Sister Doris Klein, C.S.A., officiating.

Additional visitation will take place on Saturday, August 26, 2023 DIRECTLY at Zion United Church of Christ, 14804 W. 113th Ave., Dyer, IN 46311 from 10:30 AM until the time of Memorial Service at 11:00 AM with Pastor Dave Voll and Sister Doris Klein, C.S.A., officiating.

She will be laid to rest at the Zion United Church of Christ Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be given in Joan’s name to Hospice of the Calumet Area (hospicecalumet.org) or to Zion United Church of Christ.

Rest in Peace Dear friend. You willl be missed!

I am so sorry yo hear sbout Joan. I had no idea she was sick and had passdd away until 5 minutes ago. I have known Joan since grade school. We went to school together and graduated from CPHS in 1976. I know Matt too and they were Sweethearts and together ever since Hogh school. We had a lot of great memories, I haven't seen Joan in years, but knew she was a nurse., a great wiife, mother and grandmother. My Condolances to Matt snd the whole Family. Rest in Peace dear friend. A life too short. Lauren's wedding was the last time we had the pleasure of chatting and connecting. She discussed the struggles but seemed strong then to us. I’m very sorry to hear of Joan’s passing. I haven’t seen her since high school but have followed on Facebook. She was a very special person to give so much to others . My condolences to all of her family.

I didn't get to know Joan and Matt until the last couple summers at the campground but I'm so glad I did. I would wander down to say hello to them, Don and Carla and wind up talking for hours! Great people that I've missed this season at the lake. I'm so sorry to hear of her passing and send my deepest condolences to her family especially Matt. May she rest in Heaven

Joan was a beautiful person and had a heart of gold . I have had the honor of working with her at St. Anthony's Hospice and Hospice of The Calumet . Joan would sing to the patients and genuinely loved working at Hospice. I will miss her dearly.

I worked with Joan at the Hospice of the Calumet Area. We worked many night shifts together and, It was always a pleasure, talked about our families. I will miss her a lot of wisdom came from her. She will be missed but not forgotten. My condolences to the family. God Bless

Sweet Joan….I still can’t wrap my head around the fact that you’re gone. Our lives will never be the same without you, but oh so much richer for having known you.

We have such wonderful memories of Joanie. She was such a sweet, compassionate person and always had such a lovely smile - it was always as if she was glad to see us. We had great visits when she brought Aunt Norma to visit in more recent years and always caught everyone up on my cousins and her family’s comings and goings. We send our condolences for your physical loss and will cherish our happy memories.

I am so very sorry for the loss of this wonderful lady. She was a blessing to all of my family when she cared my father during his time in hospice.

I’m at a loss for words. Joan was a dear friend for many years. Carla and I enjoyed our morning coffee clutch with Matt and Joan on the decks at the campground. We solved many of the worlds problems. I will forever cherish those memories. The laughter ( sometimes the tears) we shared around the campfire along with so many stories under the stars was something that we looked forward to each week. I send my sincere condolences to Matt, Chan, Scott, and Mike. I hope that happy memories and the fellowship of family and friends help you through this most difficult time. Joan will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Rest easy my friend.
