Jeffrey S. Sturm, Esq, age 58, of Valparaiso, IN, passed away on Monday, January 3, 2022.

Jeffrey is survived by his wife of 24 years, Sandy (nee Ripley); children: Nathaniel and Gabriel Sturm; sister: Pamela (late Scott) Jeffries; uncles: Edward (Kathy) Leatzow, James (Doreen) Weber; and many nieces and nephews.

Jeffrey was preceded in death by his son, Luke Jeffrey Sturm; parents: Richard and Virginia Sturm; and aunt, Susan Leatzow

Jeff was a graduate of Frankenmuth High School, Central Michigan University, and Valparaiso Law School. With Jeff, all mundane was made fun. Grocery shopping-an adventure. A trip to the world’s largest Rosary made from bowling balls-essential. Hunting for Petoskey stones-a contest. Easter time-a cake bake-off. A car sing-a-long-a concert. Cooking in the kitchen-a show. A slow canoe trip-dangerous. A detour for deep fried cheeseburgers-a culinary delight. Hidden money in my ashtray-a love note; and candy bar scavenger hunts on pay day.

Memorials may be made to The Sturm Family Fund for the benefit of Nathaniel & Gabriel Sturm, Centier Bank, 117th E. Joliet St., Crown Point, IN 46307.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

So sorry to hear about Jeff. He was a great person and a good friend who taught me a lot as a young lawyer. I just found out about his passing. My prayers and condolences to his family.

I just learned of Jeff's passing. He was my roommate and best friend at Valpo School of Law. I am saddened that he passed away so young. I would like to extend my condolences to his wife and children.

I am truly saddened by this news Jeff has been my Attorney on a few occasions over the last 20+ years, He was a no BS guy who always told you straight and never steered me wrong, the world has lost a truly great person.

Sandy, Nate, and Gabe, Jeff was a wonderful man. A man of True Grit. I will always remember his delicious culinary contributions at our book clubs, his generous and sincere help in his profession, and It was always enjoyable to see him on a social occasion. May God's Peace fill your hearts and may the love of your family and friends help you get through.

I was saddened to hear of the passing of Jeff. He was a tremendous person and will be greatly missed (not only by his family) by the legal community. When I first met Jeff he was working out of his office in Valparaiso. They had a pool table in the office...my kind of office. Although he had tribulations Jeff never wavered from being that jovial and positive person.

So sorry for your loss Sandy, my thoughts and prayers to you and the family. Jeff touched so many lives in the very best way. I'm grateful that I got the chance to know him as an employer and as a friend.

Jeff defended the first jury trial I did as a first chair when he worked for SF. We had to go take a dep in Fowler, IN which is south of CP in Benton County farm country. He drove an old broken down white SF car that would barely start and I told him if you just pay my client what you owe her and stop spending money on discovery and subsequently a jury trial SF could afford to get you a better company car....He just laughed and hit his hand on the hood of the car. Subsequently we worked at SJD together and he helped me learn so much about WC and after he left he was always just a phone call away and had time to help anyone. He was a great person, not just a great lawyer and will be greatly missed. I am so sorry for his family and wish you sincere condolences...He will be greatly missed.

You are deeply missed Jeff. I had the pleasure of being one of Jeff’s assistants for the past 2.5 years. He was exceptionally smart & did his job well. Everyone knew Jeff & to know him was to love him. His contagious laugh was the best thing to hear at our office. He would have us laughing everyday. I will miss that. On work he did for Lake County while I was County Attorney, Jeff made things so easy for me. He knew his "stuff" and could attack on short notice without a "grumble". Few people are blessed with his personality and desire to make things work in difficult situations. He faced very difficult "real life situations" with a smile and a positive attitude about life. Yes ....his was much too short but he filled up every moment to capacity.

My deepest condolences to your family. I worked with Jeff at both State Farm and the Spangler firm. Many times, our crew had to go to the Beer Barrel for lunch so Jeff could get a lottery ticket. Once, we ditched work so a few of us could play Trivial Pursuit in the conference room and I’m sure the whole office heard us laughing behind the door. Jeff always had a kind word and a helping hand for everyone. Such a loss not only for your family, but for everyone who had contact with him. I’m so deeply sorry for your loss.

I was so very sorry to hear about Jeff's untimely passing. My deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. I’ve known Jeff for over 30 years and always considered him a great friend, even as we had many cases involving each other. He was a fantastic lawyer, and even better person. He was the colleague I always called when I had a puzzling legal question or case, and he never failed to point me in exactly the right direction. Jeff never failed to see the human side of our profession. He had a courtroom presence and a sharp legal mind. I and my staff at Room One will miss him sorely.

I met Jeff over 25 years ago when we started playing together on the Lake County Bar Association softball team and I’m so happy to have known him. He was one of those people that I would always make it a point to talk to when our paths crossed in a courthouse or at an event because Jeff would always make me laugh and walk away with a smile. As for our softball days, if wins were based on the amount of fun a team had both during and after each game, then we were undefeated thanks to Jeff. RIP my friend.
