George “Dan” Daniel Lane, Jr., age 80, of Crown Point, passed away on November 21, 2020. He is survived by his wife of nearly 57 years, Gwen (nee Carpenter), his sons: Shawn and Patrick (Alissa), grandsons: Cameron and Casey, step-grandchildren: Ethan and Bella Gomez, brother: Jim Nicholas, and nephews: Bob & Randy Nicholas. Dan was preceded in death by his father: George, mother: Gertrude (nee O’Sullivan), brothers: Ron Nicholas and Terry Lane, and father and mother-in-law: Sid and Jean Strasburg.
Dan worked in the insurance business for many years, after he retired, he worked in the pro shop at Innsbrook Country Club and at White Hawk Country Club. He turned 80 in April and went back to work as a part-time night driver for a pharmaceutical company.
Dan was a member of the former Civic Club, the Eagles and the American Legion. He was the chairman of the Dyer High School Over 50 reunion committee for several years. He was very interested in genealogy and enjoyed gathering information about his ancestors as well as those of many friends. He was a long time member of a poker club, bowling and golf leagues. He could be found most mornings at Dunkin’ Donuts where he met with his coffee friends.

Dan coached Little League Baseball, Babe Ruth Baseball, Pups Basketball and did the announcing for Panther Football for over 25 years. He and Gwen continued to support Crown Point High School athletics, where both sons attended and played sports.

Dan proudly served as a Corpsman in the U.S Navy for four years. He was stationed at Bethesda Naval Hospital and with the US Marines in Okinawa, Japan.

Friends may visit with the family on Sunday, November 29, 2020 at Geisen Funeral Cremation & Reception Centre, 606 E. 113th Ave. Crown Point, IN 46307 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Interment will follow at Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville, IN at a later date. Funeral Services will be private for the family.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, social distancing at 6 feet, with a maximum of 25 people at any one time in the Funeral Home and face masks will be required.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Crown Point Community Foundation.

It is with a heavy heart, that we say goodbye to our long time friend. Hiren has known Dan for many years, and Miguel has known him just this year, but it didn't take long to know the great and admirable friend he was. We will forever miss him and his great stories he has shared with us over the years. He always brightened up our days here at Dunkin, it was never a dull moment with him around. P.S. I am a Marine who was wounded in Viet Nam. A Navy corpsman saved my life. I have never, and will never forget what these guys went through. Marines who've seen combat see corpsmen as brothers in a very special way. There are many who would have not enjoyed their families and their lives had it not been for these corpsmen. Wherever George served, there are those among us who owe him a debt that can't be repaid. Whatever time he served, wherever he was, his service is appreciated in a manner hard to describe. Gwen and Family, Dan was always fun and loving to me and others. I enjoyed our friendship and working with him on the class 50+class reunion! He will be missed! My prayers to Gwen and family during this time of grief and sadness. Peggy

Gwen, we were very sorry to hear of Dan's passing. We are left with many good memories of our annual get-togethers and Dan will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Godspeed and RIP old friend.

Gwen and family, we are saddened to learn of the passing of Dan. We will always remember his jolly wit and his love of the crazy poker games that were played. He is missed.

I first met Dan in 1960 at Camp Pendleton for Field Medical Service School training with the USMC. We went to Okinawa, Philippines, Hong Kong and other places. All this was before Vietnam. We were discharged in 1962. I kept in contact with Dan and Gwen and I was there for the birth of their first born, Shawn. Dan and Gwen came to our wedding in 1966. Going to miss the texts between Dan and myself during the Iowa/Indiana FB and BB games. The four of us went to Hawaii together. Many memories. Sympathy and love to Gwen and her family. Rest in peace Dano, my friend and fellow Veteran.

Sorry to hear about Dan, he was a good man and may he Rest In Peace, Gwen we won’t be able to attend on Sunday, I had my aorta valve replaced and am suppose to be careful with this COVID thing, god bless you and your family and Danny RIP, we will miss you.
