Frieda Nicholas (nee Metroyanis), of Naples, FL, passed away on Thursday, May 18, 2023, at the age of 99, just months short of her 100th birthday. She was born in Gary, Indiana on December 4, 1923, to Theodore and Mary Metroyanis.

Frieda is preceded in death by the love of her life and husband, Nick, in 1987; her parents; and her siblings: Angeline Thiakos, George Metroyanis, and Susan George.

Frieda is survived by her daughter, Irene (Nicholas) Cheek, son-in-law, Donald, son, George Nicholas, and daughter-in-law Beth. She has four grandchildren that she adored: Timothy (Megan), Nick (Ashley), Matthew, and Ashley. She has five great-grandchildren: Lydia, Nicholas, Ada, Farrah, and Bodhi. She also has many nieces and nephews who were dear to her.

Frieda graduated from Froebel High School and went to work at U.S. Steel in the payroll department until 1951. She also worked for JC Penney for 11 years. Frieda was a long-time member (since her birth) of Sts. Constantine and Helen Cathedral in Merrillville where she was active in Senior Citizen events, church choir, and The Philoptochos Society. In her later years, she moved to Florida and was a member of Annunciation Church, Fort Myers until her passing.

Frieda was an outstanding baker of Greek pastries and loved to make Greek food, serving 50 people at times. She was very proud of her heritage. She enjoyed spending time with family and being outside (if it was warm). She will be missed by many.

Friends may visit with the family on Friday, May 26, 2023 at Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 8000 Madison St. Merrillville, IN 46410, from 10:00 AM until the time of Funeral Service at 10:30 AM with Fr. Ted Poteres and Fr. Dimitri Burikas officiating.

Interment to follow at Ridgelawn Cemetery in Gary, IN.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be given in Frieda’s name to Annunciation Church, 8210 Cypress Lake Dr., Fort Myers, FL or Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 8000 Madison St., Merrillville, IN. May her memory be Eternal.
