Evelyn W. Miller gave up the ghost and went on to be with her Lord, Master and Saviour, Jesus Christ, on Monday, April 20, 2020.
She was born as Evelyn Elsie Wolfe in Knox, Indiana, on October 16, 1919 to William E. Wolfe and Edna E. (Keiser) Wolfe.
On February 13, 1943, in Greencastle, Indiana, she married Jasper L. Miller who preceded her in death on December 7, 1993. She has a son, Dennis, and three grandchildren, Jeffrey, Tracey, and Michelle plus great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren.
As a child, Evelyn plowed the fields of her father’s farm in Starke County, Indiana. Her father developed a serious case of asthma from farming and was advised by his doctor to find a new line of work. So, William moved his family, consisting of his wife and two daughters, to Michigan City (where he found work) in September, 1929. Evelyn lived in the same house from 1929 until 2020.
After graduating from Michigan City Business College in the Warren Building (circa 1938), Evelyn enjoyed her career as bookkeeper having worked at Jamar Ruby, NIPSCO, Thermogas, and LP Gas over the course of time. Additionally, she was an expert typist. She also served as manager of the B&K Root Beer stand which stood at the corner of 4th and Douglas on Michigan City’s west side. After her husband suffered a debilitating stroke in 1987, she was his faithful caregiver for 6 and a half years, up until the time of his death.
Evelyn delighted in keeping her flower garden stocked with beautiful plants. She also took pleasure in motoring around the country from California to Maine with her husband and son. After Mr. Miller passed on, she and her sister, Edith, who was also widowed, traveled to Europe a few times.
She had an abiding love of her King James Bible, and drew great comfort from it. One of her favorite scriptures is found in 1 Corinthians 15, where the Apostle Paul writes, “Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:” (verses 1 through 4).
