Burleigh Grimes

Burleigh Grimes, age 92, of Hebron, IN, formerly of Conde, SD, and Catlin, IL, passed away on Saturday, November 11, 2023.

Burleigh is survived by his wife of 68 years, Wanda Grimes (nee Buising); children: Renee (Clif) Wygant, Penny (John) Poxon; 3 grandchildren: Jonathan (Deborah) Wygant, Jennifer (Bryan) Head, Emma (Sean) Delva; 2 great-grandchildren: Sophia Wygant and Maddelyn Head; and his nieces and nephews.

Burleigh was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Marcy; siblings: Wesley Grimes, H. Eugene Grimes, Dorothy Klapperich, Maude Eske, Fran Langbehn, Florence Westbury; parents: Harry and Bessie Grimes.

Burleigh was born and raised in Conde, South Dakota and was a graduate of Conde High School, Class of 1951. He then served his country in the U.S. Army while stationed in Germany during the Korean War. After he was honorably discharged in 1954, he met his love, Wanda and they started dating. They later married on August 27, 1955. Burleigh and Wanda moved to Merrillville and he worked for Illinois Bell as a switchboard installer and repairman for 18 years. He was also a truck driver for Ryder Truck Lines before he retired.

Burleigh was a longtime member of the American Legion Post #148 in Conde, SD and Post #430 in Merrillville, IN. He loved flower gardening, working on house projects, and keeping a pristine and manicured lawn. Above all else, he loved raising and teaching life lessons to his grandchildren.

Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, November 18, 2023, at Geisen Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 624 N Main St., Hebron, IN 46341 from 10:00 AM until the time of Funeral Service at 12:00 PM.

Interment to follow at Salem Cemetery in Hebron, IN.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be given in Burleigh’s name to Wounded Warrior Project or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
