On Thursday January 28, 2021, Alfred “Gene” Goeman, age 76, passed away peacefully surrounded by his wife Judy, son Wayne, daughter-in-law Theresa, granddaughter Nicole, her fiancé Brian, and grandson Tyler, at Franciscan Health in Michigan City, IN.
Gene was born November 16, 1944 in Jefferson City, Missouri to Laverne and Mable Goeman. In 1962 Gene graduated from Crocker High School in Crocker, Missouri. Gene would later receive his Associates in Science degree from College of the Ozarks in May 1964. On August 12, 1964 he married Judith “Judy” Ann Koppler, whom he met in High School, who survives him in Westville, IN.
Gene is also survived by his sons; Troy (Dionne) Goeman Punta Gorda, FL, and C. Wayne (Theresa) Goeman of Westville, IN: grandchildren; Christopher, Nicole (Brian), Joshua (Yesenia), Tyler (Hannah), Emily Goeman, and Kristina (Chad) Summerlin: six great-grandchildren; Avery, Ethan, Marylin, Abigail Goeman, Ace, and Ayla Smith: sisters; Mable “Sam” (Robert Hissman) of Huber Heights, OH and Brenda Goeman (Wendel “Buzz” Embry) of Destin, FL: brother; Doug Goeman of Huber Heights, OH and many nieces and nephews.Gene was preceded in death by his parents, and a grandson, Joshua Summerlin.
Gene worked 20 years at the Edw Levy Co. as a dispatcher, and 22 years at Beemsterboer Slag in Hammond, until he retired in 2017 at the age of 72. Gene was a devoted husband, father, and “Papa.’ Gene enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and campground family/friends at Broken Arrow in Winamac, IN where they have had a permanent camper site for many years.
The family would like to send a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Minesh Patel of Michigan City, who went above and beyond with his care, compassion and dedication being his primary care physician over the years, especially the last nine weeks of Gene’s hospitalization.
Gene was an animal lover. He was to all who knew him, an “animal whisperer” of sorts. He is survived by his most recent rescue, a Maltese/Poodle mix he rescued in 2012, named Hershey. In keeping with Gene’s love of animals, memorial contributions may be made to the Michiana Humane Society of Michigan City, IN.
Visitation for family and friends will be held on Monday, February 1, 2021 from 1 PM to 3 PM at Geisen-Carlisle Funeral Home, located at 613 Washington St. Michigan City, IN 46360.
Funeral Services will be private for family only. Arrangements have been entrusted to Geisen-Carlisle Funeral Home.
Those in attendance will be required to wear face masks and practice social distancing in accordance with Covid-19 mandates. (Attendance is limited to 50 people)
